Originally occupied by Mississippian Native Americans, the city of Southaven was eventually founded by Kemmons Wilson and was incorporated in 1980. The city got its name from being located south of Whitehaven, Tennessee, thus, the city became “Southaven”.
Southaven is located in DeSoto county, 14 miles south of the city center of Memphis, Tennessee. It is considered part of the Memphis metropolitan area. With a population of around 54,000 people, Southaven is the third largest city in Mississippi and the second largest Memphis suburb. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the southeastern states.The entire city spans 41.5 square miles. The median home value is $154,600 and the median rent is $962. It is a very livable city with affordable housing.
