Roof Warranty Options in Oxford

History of Oxford

The land that Oxford now occupies was originally owned by Chickasaw Native Americans. Three men purchased the land from the Chickasaw tribe and established the city, which incorporated in May 1837. The men named the city after Oxford, England, with the hope of the city becoming known as a university town one day. In 1864, Oxford was nearly destroyed by Union troops as part of the American Civil War. Today, Oxford is a thriving university town, just like the founders hoped it would be.

Geography of Oxford

Oxford is 85 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee, and 160 miles north of Jackson, the capital of Mississippi. As a part of Lafayette County, Oxford is a small town with only 10 square miles of land. As of 2010, the population was 23,639. The median home value is $230,000, and the median rent cost is $1,153.

The Oxford Community

Oxford is known as a university town, but it also has a lot to offer families as well. As a part of the Oxford School District, this city has five elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. There are also private school options as well.

For outdoor fun, families can head to one of the city’s many parks. Lamar Park boasts quite a bit of green space, while Avent Park is home to a fantastic playground for kids. Other exciting parks include the Oxford Skate Park and The Grove, which is a prime spot for tailgating parties.

For a special adventure, check out the African Wildcats Adventure Safari park. Oxford is also home to two public libraries, as well as the university library. Whether you are moving as a university student or a family, the Oxford community has something for everyone.

Cordova is its own little community within the greater Memphis community and features many similarities to Memphis. If you want a smaller-town feel than what Memphis offers, this is the community for you.
