History of Cordova

The city of Cordova was founded in 1835 as a farming village. The city was previously a stop on the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway route to Memphis. Its usefulness in the railroad industry spurred its growth. The old train depot still stands in Cordova, and it was even the location of Cordova’s first library for fifty years. Today the city has grown from its farming roots into a well-established part of the Memphis community.

Geography of Cordova

Cordova is located about sixteen miles east of Memphis. A large part of Cordova has been annexed by the city of Memphis, and the remaining area of Cordova is considered unincorporated. All of Cordova is included in Shelby County. Cordova’s population is just over 60,000. The median home sale price is $198,650, and the median rent is $1,399.

The Cordova Community

One historic staple in Cordova is the Cordova Community Center, where a variety of classes and activities are available for all ages. Cordova has five elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school. There are also several private schools in the community. Cordova has its own branch of the Memphis Public Library system. Right by the library, there is a large park with a great playground and sports fields. Shelby Farms Park is also partially located in Cordova. Additionally, there are many sports facilities, including golf courses and a country club.
